The Armory, located at 934 Pearl Street, was built in 1898 to the Richardsonian Romanesque design of George Hyder. It was built by John Brierely, a successful local horticulturist and his sons, to house Company H of the First Colorado Infantry. Company H members, who drilled in the basement where a rifle range was located, participated in the Spanish American War in 1898 and in the Cripple Creek labor riots in 1903. The red brick and rusticated stone Armory’s large hall with its hardwood floors was also used for dances and basketball games. In 1918, the building was sold and operated as a laundry until 1971, when it was renovated as office space.
